How to rearrange pages in a PDF (drag and drop, free)

Pages scanned in the wrong order, or a document assembled from several files? Here is how to reorder PDF pages on Mac, Windows or in the browser.

Scanners feed pages in the wrong order, double-sided scans come out backwards, and documents assembled from several files rarely end up in the right sequence. Reordering pages should be a drag-and-drop job.

On a Mac: Preview

  1. Open the PDF in Preview and choose View → Thumbnails.
  2. Drag the thumbnails into the order you want.
  3. Choose File → Save (duplicate the file first if you want to keep the original).

On Windows

Windows has no built-in way to move PDF pages around; Adobe Acrobat's page organizer is part of the paid version. A browser-based organizer does the same job for free.

In any browser: drag the thumbnails

Drop the PDF, drag the page previews into place (or use the arrows on a phone), turn sideways pages and save. A Reverse order button fixes backwards scans in one click. Everything happens in your browser.

Pages spread across several files?

Combine the files first, then put every page exactly where you want it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rotate a page while reordering?

Yes. Preview and browser-based organizers both let you turn individual pages, which fixes sideways scans at the same time.

How do I reverse the page order of a scan?

Double-sided scans sometimes come out backwards. An organizer with a Reverse order button fixes the whole document in one click.

Does reordering change the quality?

No. Pages are moved, not re-rendered, so text and images stay exactly as they were.
